Anise Fork Cookies - 400F

1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon anise seed
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
1 large egg
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
1 teaspoon cream of tartar

  1. Soften butter, add baking soda, anise seed and salt and mix well.
  2. Gradually blend in sugar; beat in egg.
  3. Sift flour with cream of tartar; stir into mixture.
  4. Shape into 1/2-inch balls; place on ungreased cookie sheets.
  5. Dip fork tines in flour and press into each cookie in crisscross style; bake in preheated 400 F oven 8 minutes.
  6. Cook on wire racks; store in airtight containers.

Makes 7 dozen cookies. (I got 64 cookies.)

[May 2017. I have a double-sided lemon baller, sizes 022/025. I used the 025 side and got over 130 cookies. I also just forked them once, not twice, so as not to crush them. -Chaz]
