From: Steve Davies Newsgroups: rec.arts.sf.fandom Subject: VoM Issue 3 (Worldcon Newsletter) Date: Sat, 02 Sep 95 22:28:15 GMT Organization: The Fortress Unvanquishable, Save For Sacnoth Lines: 192 Reply-To: steve@vraidex.demon.co.uk VOICE OF THE MYSTERONS The INTERROGATION Newszine Friday 25th August - Morning - Issue 3 Where to get the Newsletter Info Desk (hall 4), Information Desk, Registration. Nice boxes with fluorescent pink signs saying "NEWS" on them. Please do not come to the newsroom to get copies of the newsletter unless you are partially sighted. We will try to distribute the late night issue directly to the hotels at around 10pm (provided we can find someone to distribute them for us!) Village People Recant Due to a power failure, there was no food in the YMCA cafe last night. Directions and menus for local takeaways were provided. Feeding Frenzy Which Area Head was seen spending her 5 gopher reward tokens on #10 worth of handmade chocolates? (AS) Free Drinks Programme participants cannot be supplied with a drink from Green Room during their programme item, though water is available. Ideally, you should turn up fifteen minutes in advance to get your drink - you can alternatively get it after the item. Programme Plugs Friday 14:00-15:30 Drawing the Alien Human Head, Heather Spears Monday 10:00-11:00 Believable Aliens? Enquiries on these two items to Heather Spears, Art Show Gate, Hall 4. Grovelling Apology #1 We apologise profusely for suggesting that whiskey rather than whisky was served at the civic reception last night. Luckily we get to blame Robert Sacks for this egregious error. We should also point out that the drinks were kindly provided by the Glasgow Lord Provost and Strathclyde Regional Convener. Plague of Locusts In the spirit of investigative journalism, the newsletter team tried to eat dinner at the SECC restaurant, Molindar, last night. By the time we arrived at 20:30 the assembled swarms had reduced the fare to four main courses, no starters and no desserts. They promise that they will have more food today. Legal Eagles We have received a legal warning from Warner Bros UK: under no circumstances may the convention show the four Babylon 5 episodes shown here but not in the USA. (DL) Restaurant Reviews Molindar (SECC restaurant) Nice lads - good service - food appalling. Yellowing watercress much chewed before I got it, wet potatoes, odd shaped bits of lamb. #11 + tip. Creme de la Creme Supposedly the largest Indian restaurant in Europe, with an all-you-can-eat buffet including Indian and European desserts. Recommended by locals Joan Paterson and Tibs, and listed in the Pocket Programme. Films The Glasgow Film Theatre at 12 Rose Street will be showing the new SF/Horror film Species on Saturday at 10:00 am. Entrance is free on production of your Intersection membership badge. Any reports to the Newsletter on how much of A for Andromeda has been borrowed by the film will be gratefully received. Grovelling Apology #2 Many thanks to Sue Mason for drawing the colophon for Voice of the Mysterons and apologies for failing to credit her yesterday. 4am Pratchett Signing The fire alarm at the Moat House went off twice last night, at 03:45 and 04:45, with the building being evacuated both times. The first alarm was in the 8th floor lift lobby; there is no suspicion of malpractice on the second alarm. The committee were late in evacuating as they were desperately scrabbling through their vast assortment of bleepers, radios and portable phones to see what was making the noise. Parris, who brought a Terry Pratchett book to read, was able to get it signed while waiting for the all-clear. Programme Changes Due to illness, John Brunner will not be attending any items for which he is listed. Mark Scott Zicree, writer of Babylon 5 episode Survivors, will be interviewed at 19:00 Friday in H G Wells. Regency Dance-Scottish Style, 19:30 Friday, Crest Ballroom. Due to the unexpected absence of the Regency experts, this dance will be more, er, Scottish (and general) than Regency. Real Ale Update We are informed by a usually reliable source that real ale is available on site. The Moat House has 80 shilling, but probably not for long. Bring Out Your Dead I knew fanzine fandom was dying, but this is ridiculous. Checking through the UK section of the Fan Room, I spotted just four current issues. One of them was Ansible, one of them appeared to be advertising something, and two of them were mine. The rest were prehistoric. Where are all the new fanzines? Are they simply being swapped between friends? Or is fanzine fandom dead and already being buried? I think we should be told. (SH) Artshow Programme Full ever-changing programme of interviews, demonstrations and talks. Stay tuned to The Voice of the Mysterons and see the flipchart at the Art Show entrance for full details. Tonight's highlight: 19:00 Juraj Maxon-"Does an artist need a slice of black humour to work...?" Come and see why they call him "Mad Max". (AF/LK) Programme Now Audible We have the technology. PA systems have now been installed in Hall 3, Hall 4 fan programme and Hall 4 science programme. 1995 Chesley Awards There were 67 valid ballots received for this year's voting, although not everyone voted in every category.
