Newsgroups: misc.test Subject: [alt.fandom.cons/rec.arts.sf.fandom] Science Fiction Conventions FAQ X-Newsgroups: alt.fandom.cons,rec.arts.sf.fandom,news.answers Followup-To: alt.fandom.cons,rec.arts.sf.fandom Reply-To: smofsweb@bostonbaden.com (Chaz Boston Baden) Organization: Science Fiction Resource Guide Updated 30 January 1997. This is file cons.faq available at http://ddb.com/smofs/cons.faq, maintained by smofs(at)ddb.com (Chaz Boston Baden). I am sick and tired of unsolicited commercial e-mail ("spam"). If you want to send anybody listed here some e-mail, you'll need to change the (at)signs. Q-1. What conventions are coming up in my area? Can I find out by e-mail? Q-2. How do I get my favorite convention listed on the lists? Q-3. What and where is The Science Fiction Resource Guide? Q-4. How do I get files off of the SF-Lovers Archives? Q-5. What do all these fannish abbreviations and jargon mean? Q-6. Unanswered and incomplete questions for possible future inclusion. Q-7. Material for further research. Q-1. How do I get my favorite convention listed on the lists? A-2. Sublett Rd. #890 Arilington TX 76017-5461 (As we get other addresses for this sort of thing, I'll list them here.) Q-3. What and where is The Science Fiction Resource Guide? A-3. The Science Fiction Resource Guide is a web page, maintained by Chaz Boston Baden, sfrg(at)sflovers.rutgers.edu. The SF-Lovers Archive edition is at: http://sflovers.rutgers.edu/Web/SFRG/ There are also mirror sites in North America and Europe. (Trans-Pacific mirror sites - i.e. Down Under and Asia - are solicited.) It has links all over the place; it attempts to be thoroughly inclusive, and is designed to be a directory to the SF-Lovers Archives and the rest of the world of fandom as well. Send updates to sfrg(at)sflovers.rutgers.edu. Q-4. How do I get files off of the SF-Lovers Archives? A-4. Via the Web (the fastest and easiest way) at http://sflovers.rutgers.edu/ The ftp site is: ftp://sflovers.rutgers.edu/pub/sf-lovers/ - note that the old site, gandalf/elbereth, no longer has any SF-Lovers files. Here are the subdirectories: Awards bibliographies bibliographies/authorlists fandom fandom/conventions fandom/smofs fandom/WSFS FAQs fiction FILMS publishers TV TV/EpisodeGuides Web You can also get files off via e-mail. Send e-mail to sf-lovers-ftp(at)sflovers.rutgers.edu that says, in the body of the message, help and you'll get back more info. (I don't really want to retype all of the same info...) Q-5. What do all these fannish abbreviations and jargon mean? A-5. See the dictionary of Fannish Terms, currently maintained by rich brown and hosted by Roxanne Smith-Graham at: http://www.fentonnet.com/smithway/fstuff/a-f.html Q-6. Unanswered or incomplete questions. Possibly material for another FAQ. * What related groups are there? (See also rec.arts.sf.* hierarchy) alt.fandom.cons, rec.arts.sf.fandom, ... * What related mailing lists are there? SF-LOVERS(at)sflovers.rutgers.edu, SMOFS(at)sflovers.rutgers.edu ... * What is the group charter for these newsgroups? alt.fandom.cons rec.arts.sf.fandom * What web pages are particularly appropriate for further use? Q-7. Material for further research. "Well, what does a FAQ for this group need besides a how-to for getting stuff of of gandalf.rutgers.edu (like cons.txt!), a list of related groups and mailing lists, and the group charter? Maybe a index of some of the useful files at gandalf, address of some www archives like um, is it lysator?" (I forget who said this to me) "I think it's a good idea, if you're willing to put in the time. IMHO, this is only a start. "First, I think the FAQ should be for rec.arts.sf.fandom only. It's a little different from alt.fandom.cons as the subject matter is not solely centered on cons. [I wrote this FAQ for alt.fandom.cons first! -ed.] "With this in mind, I think additional questions should added. Ones that pop to mind include: * spelling out (vaguely) what this group is for--I don't mean in order for us to be always crying "that's off-topic!", but rather to give pointers to more appropriate news groups such as rec.arts.sf.written and rec.arts.sf.tv * list of web pages relating to fandom and how a newbie can access them * perhaps a short history of fandom "I'm sure the others will come up with even more additions."
