Your daughter's party sounds like it was a lot more fun than the parties I remember attending when I was 10. I think Kevin would prefer to paint pottery than spend the day at work, but alas, I don't think our manager would agree. I like you idea though, and am going to hang on to it in case I ever have kids of my own. My office-mate is celebrating his 30-something-th birthday > next Wednesday. Kevin is a kid at heart, so last year, I baked him a > chocolate sheet cake, frosted it with white frosting, and decorated it > with M&Ms. Sounds good to me. But let me pass on a trick we stumbled onto at the 10-year-old's birthday. (She baked & decorated her own cake, by the way, and we're quite proud of her. Worked from a mix [which is what I do, so I can't fault her there], but for the frosting I just told her to add powdered sugar, add a little milk, beat and see if it's the right consistency & add more sugar or milk to change it... and, she got to decide exactly how much cocoa... and then made another batch of blue icing to write on the cake with... Well, anyhow, where was I?) oh yes. If you make a standard box of cake, it fills a 9x13 pan, or you can make 2 layers, blah blah blah. But consider using a "jellyroll" 11x17 pan. It makes a great big, thin, cake. This worked out great! We'd decided that her birthday party would be at a paint-your-pottery place. There's this nifty shop where you pay for the plaster statue/whatever of your choice, and they'll let you sit down and use their paints & brushes to paint it. We had our party there. The cake was great, because it made naturally smaller (thinner, flatter) portions, so you could have a piece of cake.... paint your first coat... have another piece of cake while it dries.. paint some more... have another piece.... -- * L.A.con III * World Science Fiction Convention * lacon3-info@netcom.com * Aug29-Sep02 '96, Anaheim CA * Ftp = ftp.netcom.com:/pub/la/lacon3-info/ **> Web page = http://lacon3.worldcon.org/ * Alternate = ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/la/lacon3-info/www/lacon3.html * Join for $90 * L.A.con III, c/o SCIFI P.O.
