My middle daughter suffered from severe headaches from very early on. When she was diagnosed with asthma, her doctor noticed the headache history, and asked if we had ever been asked about food allergies, as a number of foods seem to cause headaches in some individuals. He gave us a copy of his list, and we were able to pinpoint a number of triggers for her headaches. She is still able to use those items, but very carefully, and in moderation. Her headaches have been almost totally eliminated. So, here's the headache list: Diet For The Headache Patient Avoid the following foods: Ripened cheeses (cheddar, gruyere, stilton, brie, etc.) Permissible cheeses: American, cottage, cream, and Velveeta. Herring Chocolate Vinegar (except white vinegar) Fermented, pickled, or marinated foods Sour cream, yogurt Nuts, peanut butter Hot fresh bread, raised coffee cakes, doughnuts. Pods of broad beans (lima, navy, and pea pods) Any foods containing large amounts of monosodium glutamate (MSG) e.g.: Chinese foods Onions Canned figs Citrus foods (no more than one orange per day) Bananas (no more than one half per day) Pizza Pork (no more than 2 or 3 times per week) Excessive tea, coffee, cola beverages (no more than 4 cups per day) Avocado Fermented sausage (bologna, salami, pepperoni,, summer sausage, hot dogs) Chicken livers Avoid all alcoholic beverages, if possible. If you must drink, take no more than 2 normal sized drinks. Suggested drinks: sauterne and Riesling wines,, Seagram's VO, Cutty Sark, vodka. Avoid red wines and champagne. My daughter's triggers were peanut butter, cheddar cheese and onions (not necessarily together) and grapefruit juice. If she's careful, she can have almost anything. It's made a tremendous difference! Good Luck! Sharon
