They are baked in ruffled papers. They are a dessert, not a breakfast food. "Muffins" are heavier, usually greasier, and never frosted. They often contain bits of fruit or nuts, and are considered a breakfast food, not a dessert. Yes, the two are somewhat similar, especially since some enterprising soul decided that muffins could include chocolate chips, but the two are culturally distinct items. --Nonie
