If anyone actually wants to know:

In America, "cupcakes" are small sweet round cakes, usually made
of standard cake mix, often frosted. They are baked in ruffled papers.
They are a dessert, not a breakfast food.

"Muffins" are heavier, usually greasier, and never frosted. They often
contain bits of fruit or nuts, and are considered a breakfast food,
not a dessert.

Yes, the two are somewhat similar, especially since some enterprising
soul decided that muffins could include chocolate chips, but the two
are culturally distinct items.
