Ryan" Hi All: Well, about two weeks ago, I said I was going to post some information from an article I read in our local newspaper (dated July 20) and I'm just now getting around to sending in that posting. Sorry for the delay. The article was giving information on the basic items one needs to set up a kitchen. Here's their list of "the basics": Baking powder Baking soda Basil Bay leaf Black pepper Bouillon cubes Bread crumbs Brown sugar Butter or margarine Cayenne pepper Chili powder Cinnamon Cloves, ground Cocoa Corn starch Flour Garlic (fresh/powder) Honey Jelly Ketchup Lemon juice Mayonnaise Mustard Onions Oregano Parmesan cheese Parsley Salad dressing Salt Soy Sauce Thyme White sugar Worcestershire sauce Vanilla Vegetable oil Vinegar I have most of these, but not all...not much time to cook, I guess :) There was also a section on basic equipment a first kitchen needs. It listed: At least two high-quality knives, a 3 or 4 inch paring knife and an 8 to 10 inch utility knife. Two pans and lids. A 9 by 13 inch metal of glass baking pan. A metal cookie sheet. A vegetable peeler. A 2-cup microwave-safe liquid measuring cup, a cup for measuring dry ingredients and a set of steel measuring spoons. A 12-by-16 inch acrylic cutting board or a flexible chopping mat. A 2-quart mixing bowl in microwave-safe glass or plastic, with lid. A heat-resistant plastic or metal spatula turner/flipper. A large wooden mixing spoon. A plastic strainer or colander. A hand-operated can opener. Several dish towels and two potholders. Tongs. Another article listed how long foods will keep. I found in interesting. Here it listed: Brownie mix: 9 months Dried beans: 12 months Ketchup: 12 months Canned foods: 12 months Packaged cookies: 2 months Chocolate: 12 months Crackers: 8 months Flour: 6-8 months Canned frosting: 3 months Ready-to-eat cereal: 6-12 months Gelatin: 18 months Frozen TV dinner: 3 months Ice cream: 2-4 months Jellies: 12 months Bottled juice: 9 months Margarine: 4-6 months Mayonnaise: 2-3 months Salted nuts: 6-8 months Dried pasta: 2 years Peanut butter: 6-9 months Popcorn, unpopped: 2 years Pudding mixes: 12 months Rice: 2 years Salad dressing: 10-12 months Sauces/gravy mixes: 6-12 months Soup mixes: 12 months Sugar: 2 years I thought you all would like this. Hope it's interesting to someone.
